Telecom Briefing Objective
The first FTTx Briefing, Market Opportunities for FTTx, was held in December of 2004 just as the RBOCs were launching their FTTP programs. This years event will review the progress being made by the RBOCs and the competitive reaction by the MSOs. Much has been said about plans for IPTV but little has been done to date. The municipal market continues to grow but legislation is being prepared as part of the rewrite of the Telecommunications Act to restrict cities and states from getting into the telecommunications business. There is increased pressure on the government to promote broadband deployment based on the progress being made overseas. The State of the FTTx business will be addressed by three consultants, carriers, manufacturers, and local government representatives with the objective of identifying new market opportunities for systems, subsystems, and component suppliers.
Topics to be Covered Include:
- Actual numbers of homes passed and the take rates to date and forecasted
- Experiences learned
- Status of IPTV
- Systems and component price trends
- Is it possible to make money in this market
- Summary of the status of RBOC RFP for GPON
- Recent Broadband Experiments in Hong Kong and Japan
Questions to be Answered Include:
- What new technologies need to be develop to make FTTP a success?
- Which will win, APON, GPON or EPON ?
- What impact will the FTTH Council have?
- What is the economic impact of broadband?
- What will be the role of Yahoo, Google, E-Bay and Microsoft if any?
