Photonics Briefing Notes #2:
Tunable Laser Technology: Overview of the Optical Network and the Tunable Laser Market
October 25, 2000
9am to 4:00pm
Burlington, MA
Marriott Hotel
|
Chairman: Kurt Linden, SPIRE Corp.
About the Briefing:
As the number of wavelengths that can be transmitted through an optical fiber increases the demand for Tunable lasers becomes more critical. With future advances decreasing the channel spacing from 50 to 25 Ghz, the possibility exists of systems with more than 300 wavelengths per fiber will be possible in the near future.
As the number of wavelengths increases, Tunable Lasers offer the potential of cost, operational and application advantages. Unlike fixed lasers designed for a specific wavelength, Tunable Lasers can provide any of a number of wavelengths, which is why they are so important as the wavelength counts continue to increase.
The Executive Photonics Briefings on Tunable Lasers reviewed the potential market for Tunable Lasers, explored various technologies being considered, and assessed
the impact of Tunable Lasers on system design.
