Photonics Briefing Notes #3:
DWDM Devices
November 15, 2000
9am to 3:30pm
Waltham, MA
The Westin Hotel
|
Chairman: Dr. Robert Runk, Photonic Communication Consulting
Objective:
One of the critical elements of an Optical Network are the DWDM Devices that multiplex different wavelengths over a single fiber and then demultiplex the same wavelengths. There are several technologies that are used including Thin Film Filters (TFF), Arrayed Waveguides (AWG), Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), Fused Biconical Couplers (FBC) and bulk devices. These are the major types used today, but may change as new technology develops.
DWDM devices are a microcosm of the components used in Optical Networks, issues involved in manufacturing, and how the basic components are enablers for other components or subsystems. The briefing will review these major devices, their market trends, and how they are used in different applications.
