Telecom Briefing Objective

Ethernet, a technology developed originally for LANs is emerging as a major driver of telecommunications networks. As a result of service provider demand, the total metropolitan Ethernet equipment market will increase from $837 million in 2002 to $4.4 billion by the end of 2007, representing a 39 percent compound annual growth rate over the next five years, according to a new report by IDC entitled "Worldwide Metro Ethernet Equipment Forecast and Analysis, 2003-2007".

"The metro Ethernet qquipment market is an enormous opportunity for vendors," said Sterling Perrin, senior research analyst in IDC's Optical Networks program. "Revenue and growth will be substantial and should attract the attention of any large telecommunications and networking suppliers looking for groth opportunities over the next five years."

The dominance of Ethernet in the LAN environment is now spreading to the Metro, WAN, and Access markets. With such a large installed base of Ethernet LAN ports, it is only natural for network operators and service providers to consider extending Ethernet into the Metro, WAN, and Access networks, especially considering the new, inexpensive interfaces, components, and modules that have been developed for that market in the last few years and months. The recent ratification of the 10 Gbps standard and work on 100 Gbps Ethernet shows a clear migration path to higher speeds.

The industry has sensed the potential market and has formed two industry groups: "Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)," and the "Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM)," to develop Ethernet Metro and Access networks.

Because this field is moving so fast, this one-day Executive Telecom Briefing is intended to provide an up-to-date picture of the status of the standards, technology, applications by carriers and service providers, equipment vendor strategies, and opportunities for new entrants.

The Briefing will be chaired by Dr. Alan Weissberger, a world-renowned expert and contributor to Ethernet standards.
